Trendable: The “Fashionable” App

Following up with last week’s post on Instagram, I will be taking a look at another photo mobile app with a focus on fashion, “Trendabl.” The fashion app launched on March 26, 2012 and was crated by John Alagem, a University of Pennsylvania graduate who realized finance was not his calling, according to and launched the app after leaving his job at a hedge fund.

The app is being referred to as Instagram for fashion. Users can take photos of their entire outfits or particular items and edit the photos through filters, much like Instagram. In the next step users can pick up to three categories to tag the photo. The categories include all clothing and accessory items, from shirts to dresses, to swimwear, to jewelry. From there users can add a caption, as well as individual information about each item including, the color, store or brand, and price. Images can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr and followers can comment and like posts.

According to an interview in, Alagem “wanted to create a visually beautiful social media platform that allows users to share and discover the latest trends in fashion.” The fashion focus is what sets Trendabl apart from Instagram.“It was important to us to create an environment that encourages conversation between users, friends, brands, and tastemakers. Fashion has always been about showing off your style and that’s what we aim to accomplish,” states Alagem.”

For the app’s initial launch it received great buzz on outlets such as WWD and This could  be due to the app’s celebrity and fashion designer endorsors including, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Carolina Herrera, Barneys New York, Brad Goreski, DVF, Michael Kors, and Gotham Magazine, just to name a few.

While the initial buzz was rather big, it doesn’t appear as if that many other celebrities and brands have caught the Trendabl bug yet. Instagram was created over a year ago, but gained more popularity later on and after Facebook’s $1 billion purchase of the site last week, it’s only bound to grow. Like Instagram, I think this app will take some time to increase its reach. However, one advantage this app has over instagram is its e-commerce capabilities, which would be the app’s last of three phases. According to an article in WWD, “Alagem has plans to adopt it for other smartphones, but so far the iPhone app is the first of three phases Alagem has planned for Trendabl, the second being a website.”

What is so great about this app is that unlike Instagram, users can see exactly see where items can be bought and for what price. This makes finding the pieces we covet easy! However, one feature I don’t like about app are the filters. There are not enough options and the filters don’t appear to alter the photos appearance as much as the filters on Instagram.

Do you use Trendabl? What do you like and not like about the new app? Share your thoughts on the Trendabl here!

How to Instagram like a Fashion Pro

With Facebook’s recent purchase of Instagram for $1 Billion and the app’s expansion to Droid phones there is sure to be a whole lot more of Instagraming going on. Having become an Instagram user with the app’s intial launch, you could say I have quite a bit of “Instalove” for the app.

For those of you not on the Instagram bandwagon yet (or you recent Droid users), Instagram is  “inspired by the Polaroid camera. First, Instagram is for taking pictures, adding filters to make them look retro, and then for sharing them with sites like Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, and Facebook. And second, it’s a simple social network of other people’s photos. You can “like” or comment on the photos, and see what’s new. It’s easy and doesn’t take much time or effort. This is one of the reasons it has become so popular so quickly,” according to Business Insider.

Anyone can master the easy-to-use app with its basic photo filters; however, see a few of my tips below to create more advanced photos and the perfect spotlight to feature your fashionable life!

1. Multiple photos in one frame

Instagram + Photo Collage

Do you ever see your followers or following using multiple photos in one frame? If so and you want to join in you need to download one or two other apps. There are a variety of other apps you can use in conjunction with Instagram; however, I prefer Photo Collage and Diptic. These apps cost about $1.99 each but are definitely worth it. You can use them to upload multiple photos or the same photo and zoom in or out to highlight different parts of the photo. These apps are great for fashionistas who want to highlight parts of their outfits. As shown, in my second photo the three frames on Diptic allow me to give close-ups of my necklace and bracelets, as well a full body shot of my complete outfit.

2. Double filters

Double filter

Double Filter

Using multiple filters can create unique and interesting looks to any photo. I use multiple filters by either taking screenshots on my phone (holding down the top and middle, circular button simultaneously). Another way is to filter your desired photo and save it to your camera roll. Then choose the same photo and run the now filtered photo through the filters again, creating a double filter effect. Using a double effect for photos of clothing or accessories can enhance its aesthetic, creating a stand-out look and enhancing the appearance of the item itself.

3. Photoshop Express

Photoshop Express

Photoshop Express is a free app that allows you to alter your photos by using different frames, filters, altering brightness, color, and much more. While it’s not as extensive as the computer version, Photoshop Express allows you a lot of freedom to alter your photos in any way you like and it’s free!  See my example above.

4. Find and gain followers

Using hashtags on your photos will allow you to be more searchable to other users. Much like Twitter, hashtags can be used for anything you post.  For example, using the hashtag #chicago allows you to be found by anyone searching #chicago and allows you to view all other users photos that used that same hashtag.

5. Follwer Instagram fashion Insiders

Many brands and companies use Instagram to give followers behind-the-scenes looks at inside the company. Instagram was used highly during fashion week this season by editors and PR people alike. See some of my favorite users to follow below.

1. Free people (@freepeple)
2. Rebecca Minkoff (@rebeccaminkoff)
3. Bergdorfs (@Bergdorfs)

While I am not all that excited about Facebook buying Instagram, I am interested to see what is in store for the app because there are bound to be  changes. I would like to see Instagram access via the computer. What are your thoughts? Share your Instagram tips here!
